3.(Old) x^3+1=(x+1)(x^2-x+1), where x+1 and x^2-x+1 are both positive integers and are bigger than 1, thus x^3+1 is a composite number.
3.(New) let's assume a/b is rational, then it can be written as p/q where p, q are integers; and likewise b can be written as p'/q' where p', q' are integers. Thus a=p'p/q'q, both p'p and q'q are integers, so a is rational, contradicting "a is irrational".
