Divine Origins #1: Kotoamatsukami

When the universe first came into existence, the celestial realm of Takamagahara was formed, serving as the divine abode where the earliest Kami emerged. The first group of Kami are referred to as Kotoamatsukami (別天津神), “distinguished heavenly Kami”. These Kami are hitorigami, existing singly without gender or pairs.

The first three are considered the Three Kami of Creation, while the following two appeared some time afterward.

1. Ame-no-Minakanushi (天之御中主), “Heavenly Ancestral God of the Originating Heart of the Universe”.
2. Takamimusubi (高御産巣日), “High Generative Force” — rules the Takamagahara alongside Amaterasu. According to some traditions, Takamimusubi or Amaterasu sent a bird down to Ame no Wakahiko, the ruler of Earth, as they had not heard from him in three years. Ame no Wakahiko shot the bird with an arrow, which continued to heaven. Takamimusubi threw the arrow back down to Earth, striking and killing him while he slept. He is the grandfather of Ninigi-no-Mikoto, husband of Konohanasakuya-hime. He is also the father of Takuhadachiji-hime, Omoikane, and Futodama. The parentage of Sukunabikona is debated between Takamimusubi and Kamimusubi.
3. Kamimusubi (神産巣日), “Spirit Generative Force”.
4. Umashiashikabihikoji-no-mikoto (可美葦芽彦舅尊), “Sweet Reed-Shoot Prince Elder” — arose from something similar to reed shoots that sprouted from oil when the land was young.
5. Amenotokotachi (天之常立神).

While the Kotoamatsukami represent the foundational deities of Shinto cosmology, they are not as widely revered in contemporary practice as other Kami associated with folk tales, prosperity, and natural phenomena. However, their significance lies in their role as the originators of the Divine Order, providing the spiritual and mythological framework upon which later generations of Kami were built.
